Thirsting for God.

"As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God."

The psalmist, who lived close to the outdoors and it's wild creatures, would have seen deer panting for the clear water of the mountain brook. The animal's compelling thirst formed a picture for him that symbolized his intense longing and need for God: "My soul thirsts for God, for the living God".

This longing is the elemental need of the soul. Jesus promised: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matthew 5:6)

Augustine gave this longing memorable expression in his prayer: "O God, our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you." There is a deep thirst of the soul that no earthly spring can quench. There are hungers that no earthly bread can satisfy. God alone can fulfill the deepest longings and needs of the spirit. HE alone can still the restlessness of the soul. Without him we are as fish out of water, birds without a sky.

Christ is to our souls what water is to our bodies -- an absolute necessity for life and sustenance, and the satisfaction of our most intense longings. Jesus declared that he is the LIving Water: "Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:14).
